Amazon rainforest conservation in the Envira Reserve

Context

The Envira Amazonia Project, located in the Brazilian state of Acre, addresses deforestation caused by agriculture and grazing. The project protects the Amazon rainforest while generating certified carbon credits.

The Envira Amazonia Project covers about 39,000 hectares of primary Amazon rainforest, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. This area faces intense pressures from land conversion for cattle ranching, illegal logging, and fires. The loss of these tropical forests accelerates climate change and destroys unique habitats. To address this, the project applies the REDD+ model, which prevents more than 1.2 million tons of CO₂e emissions each year, resulting in measurable and verifiable CO₂e capture and storage. At the same time, the Envira Amazonia Project supports local communities by providing training, sustainable economic alternatives, and access to essential services.

Stakeholders and local partners

Who are the key stakeholders?

The Envira Amazonia Project was developed in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including the state of Acre, local institutions, and the surrounding communities. The people of Acre are actively involved in protecting the reserve, monitoring against deforestation, and developing sustainable agroforestry practices. The carbon credits generated by the project are sold on the voluntary carbon market, helping maintain existing carbon stocks while supporting local communities. This multi-level approach, required for carbon credit certification, ensures transparency through satellite monitoring, external audits, and periodic reporting. Governance combines indigenous knowledge, technical expertise, and private funding to guarantee the long-term protection of the reserve.

Objectives and approach

The project aims to conserve the Amazon rainforest within the Envira reserve, reduce harmful deforestation, and generate carbon credits.

The primary objective of Envira Amazonia Project is to protect over 39,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest, preserving local biodiversity and reducing deforestation. In addition, the reserve helps prevent the emission of more than 1.2 million tons of CO₂e per year, making the forest a crucial ally in carbon capture and storage. At the same time, the project seeks to strengthen the resilience of local communities by providing training, sustainable livelihood alternatives, and new sources of income that reduce dependence on destructive practices.

The Envira Amazonia Project adopts an integrated approach that combines environmental protection with community development. Areas most at risk of deforestation are identified and continuously monitored using satellite technology and independent audits. Local communities are involved at every stage, from preventing illegal logging to implementing agroforestry practices that generate income without harming the forest. In this way, Envira becomes not only a green lung of the Amazon but also an innovative model of social and economic resilience.
