Tropical forest conservation in the Tapichalaca Reserve

Context
Threatened by deforestation and agriculture, the Tapichalaca Reserve is a vital refuge for tropical forest biodiversity, and linking it to Podocarpus and Yacuri National Parks is key to its protection.
Objectives and approach
The goal is to conserve the Andean montane forest of Tapichalaca and strengthen the ecological corridor between Podocarpus and Yacuri.
Objectives
The project focuses on protecting Tapichalaca Reserve's extensive forest area and conserving the rare species that inhabit it. The reserve aims to ensure the survival of the Jocotoco Antpitta, a flagship species of the area, and the mountain tapir. Another key objective is to expand the protected area to strengthen the ecological connection between the two nearby national parks and create a vital wildlife corridor. The project also rigorously monitors forest health and CO₂ storage capacity, ensuring that climate benefits are measurable and certifiable. Finally, the project engages local communities to support sustainable practices and unlock new economic opportunities.
Approach
Tapichalaca’s approach combines direct conservation, scientific research, and community development. Expanding the reserve is strengthening its role as an ecological corridor between two large parks, improving survival prospects for threatened species and helping to halt deforestation. Satellite technologies and bioacoustic AI systems allow for the collection of advanced data on biodiversity and forest health. Collaboration with local communities in the Palanda basin supports the creation of buffer zones, reducing external pressures and enhancing the resilience of the area.
