Context

The Marovolavo mangrove forest has suffered significant degradation due to unsustainable resource management. The goal is to restore the ecosystem, leveraging their role as a vital ally in protecting the environment.

Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting soil from wave action, filtering and cycling water, and supporting biodiversity. Over the years, Madagascar mangroves have suffered deforestation, compromising these functions, increasing soil erosion, and heightening the vulnerability of local communities that rely on the ecosystem services provided by mangrove forests. Additionally, their high carbon sequestration capacity makes them essential for climate change mitigation. The project focuses on planting new trees using native species to restore ecosystem balance and preserve all the associated benefits of mangrove forests.

Who are the key stakeholders?

The project, managed and coordinated by Eden Reforestation, was created with the goal of restoring the ecosystem while simultaneously addressing poverty in the project areas, establishing a virtuous cycle between people and nature. By directly involving local communities in every stage of the project, from planning to operational activities, the initiative generates employment opportunities and training, improving the quality of life for residents while reestablishing balance between communities and the ecosystem. In this way, resources are used sustainably and local community members learn to manage project activities as a source of livelihood.

Objectives and approach

The goal of the project is to restore the Marovolavo mangroves to strengthen coastal ecological functions, increase CO₂ capture, and support local communities.

The project aims to recreate a mangrove forest capable of restoring the lost functionality of the ecosystem. One of its key goals is to preserve and significantly increase the ecosystem’s capacity for CO₂ absorption and storage, leveraging mangrove's natural resilience. Additionally, actively involving local communities is essential, providing training and employment opportunities to ensure the long-term sustainable management of the project.

The approach involves carefully identifying areas for reforestation, selecting native species suited to the soil and water conditions, and engaging the local population in the reforestation project. Indeed, local communities are central to the process: they are heavily involved in the planning stage, participate in planting, and carry out post-planting monitoring. The work is supported by technical partners and a strong educational component to ensure both ecological and social sustainability. All activities are coordinated with transparency and hands-on commitment in the field.
